Helping my kids choose careers early.

As we watch our kids grow we notice their interests change from one day to the next, so how do we help them get on a path that will enable them to not only have fulfilling careers but also be financially stable?

Here in Zambia, I’ve notice when kids are asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, that I can place a bet on what their answers will be. Doctor, teacher, policeman, soldier and nurse are usually the most likely answer.

I remember in the 8th grade being given a book of professions from the librarian and being awed at the fact that there were so many different types of careers I had never even thought of. So, how can I now start inspiring my tribe on the plethora of careers out there?

First, I’ve started by encouraging skills they are innately good at.

For instance my 5th grader (Dubby) loves to try and fix broken electronics. (Sometimes I feel he breaks things beyond repair when it could have been fixed, another story) In order to keep him interested I have looked up Robotics shows near or in my area that we can attend so he can continue to be inspired by speaking with Computer Engineers, Scientists and Mechanical Engineers.

Secondly, find educational programming that fits their interests to watch together.

My No. 4 (Marvin Jr.) loves animals and is “usually” enthusiastic when it comes to their care, well-being and playtime. In this respect, we love watching How Do Animals Do That and Animal Cops (along with Treehouse Masters). He learns so much and I try to make sure he knows that being a Veterinarian isn’t only about cats and dogs.

Lastly, I pay attention to what grabs and holds their interests.

It’s easy for kids to ask for things like keyboards and ballet lessons but most of us know these interests can wane over time. If your son likes building things try and do some diy or download an app for easy floor plans and see what holds his interest.

I by no way think these are the only ways to help your child grow but some extra advice never hurt. So here’s a few more ways from kuder.com that can help you.
